Origini
La razza, originaria dell’isola di Pantelleria, deriva dall’incrocio tra soggetti africani e soggetti siciliani provenienti dal ragusano.
Caratteristiche
Il mantello è morello o baio scuro con riga mulina; pelo corto e liscio, infarinatura del muso con a volte presenza di focature attorno ad occhi e naso.
Testa piccola, asciutta , con grandi occhi, fronte larga, orecchie piccole e mobili.
La taglia è medio grande; raggiunge un’altezza al garrese di 140 cm nei maschi e di 124 cm nelle femmine.
Di temperamento nevrile e vivace è un buon ambiatore.
Le sue doti di rusticità e frugalità ne consentono l’allevamento allo stato brado anche in condizioni di carenze alimentari ed idriche.
Attitudini
Nell’isola di Pantelleria, in passato, veniva utilizzato per la soma, la sella ed il traino nonché per la produzione mulina.
A far data dal 1989 è iniziato un progetto per il recupero della razza a cura dell’Azienda Forestale Demaniale della Regione Sicilia; l’azione di recupero può essere favorita anche attraverso l’impiego nelle
aziende agrituristiche e nella produzione di latte.

Peculiarities
Population: 76 heads in 2 farms. The coat is black or dark bay with a back line, white face, sometimes dark lines around eyes and nose. Small head with large eyes, broad forehead, small and mobile ears. The size is medium-large; average withers height is respectively 140 in males and 124 cm in females. The temperament is lively and nervily, he is a good walker at amble.
Its qualities of rusticity and frugality allow it to be reared in the wild even in conditions of food and water shortages.
Attitude
It was used for heavy charge works, riding and tow as well as for mill production.
Since 1989 a project has been started for the recovery of the breed by the State Forestry Agency of the Sicily Region, also favored by the use in the
Agritourist farms and milk production.
